Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri River, and such principal streams of it, as, by its course and communication with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, whether the Columbia, Oregon, Colorado, or any other river, may offer the most direct and practicable water-communication across the continent for the purposes of commerce. – Thomas Jefferson   1803

The Lewis & Clark Trail presently commemorates the route of the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, and return.

The Ohio River Trail Council supports Pittsburgh as a proper launch point for the Lewis and Clark National Historic (Land & Water) Trail.  The proposed Ohio River Land and Water Trails follows the route of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
